SONA MOHAPATRA
Sona Mohapatra is a prominent Indian singer, music composer, and lyricist who has made a significant impact on the Indian music scene with her powerful voice and diverse musical styles. Born in Cuttack, Odisha, she holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar, and an MBA in Marketing from the Symbiosis Centre for Management & HRD, Pune.
Her career in the music industry began in advertising, where she created famous jingles for brands like Tata Salt and Close Up. She released her debut album, titled Sona, in 2007, which experimented with genres such as rock, R&B, Flamenco, and Hindustani music. She achieved mainstream fame through Aamir Khan’s talk show Satyamev Jayate, where she served as both a lead performer and an executive producer for the musical segments. Her songs for the show, such as "Mujhe Kya Bechega Rupaiya," became viral hits for their strong social messages.
In Bollywood, she is well-known for popular tracks like "Bedardi Raja" from Delhi Belly, "Ambarsariya" from Fukrey, and "Jiya Laage Na" from Talaash. She is married to the renowned music director Ram Sampath, with whom she partners in their production house, OmGrown Music. Beyond her singing, Mohapatra is recognized as a vocal advocate for women's rights and was a key figure in the Indian #MeToo movement. She also produced and featured in the documentary Shut Up Sona, which explores her journey as an artist and her fight against systemic gender bias in the industry.
വൈവിധ്യമാര്ന്ന സംഗീതശൈലി കൊണ്ട് സംഗീതരംഗത്ത് തനതായ മുദ്ര പതിപ്പിച്ച ഗായികയും സംഗീതസംവിധായികയും ഗാനരചയിതാവുമാണ് സോന മോഹപാത്ര. ഒഡിഷയിലെ കട്ടക്കില് ജനിച്ച ഇവര് ഭുവനേശ്വറിലെ കോളേജ് ഓഫ് എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് ആന്ഡ് ടെക്നോളജിയില് നിന്ന് മെക്കാനിക്കല് എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗില് ബി.ടെക് ബിരുദവും, പുണെ സിംബയോസിസ് സെന്റര് ഫോര് മാനേജ്മെന്റ് ആന്ഡ് എച്ച്.ആര്.ഡിയില് നിന്ന് മാര്ക്കറ്റിംഗില് എം.ബി.എയും കരസ്ഥമാക്കി.
പരസ്യരംഗത്തിലൂടെയാണ് കരിയര് ആരംഭിച്ചത്. ടാറ്റാ സാള്ട്ട്, ക്ലോസ് അപ്പ് തുടങ്ങിയ ബ്രാന്ഡുകള്ക്കായി ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ ജിംഗിളുകള് തയ്യാറാക്കി. 2007-ല് പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ 'സോന' എന്ന ആദ്യ ആല്ബം റോക്ക്, ആര് ആന്റ് ബി (R&B), ഫ്ലെമെന്കോ, ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി സംഗീതം എന്നിങ്ങനെ വിവിധ ശൈലികളുടെ പരീക്ഷണമായിരുന്നു. ആമിര് ഖാന്റെ 'സത്യമേവ് ജയതേ' എന്ന ടോക്ക് ഷോയിലൂടെയാണ് അവര്ക്ക് വലിയ ജനപ്രീതി ലഭിച്ചത്. ഈ ഷോയില് പ്രധാന ഗായിക എന്നതിന് പുറമെ മ്യൂസിക്കല് സെഗ്മെന്റുകളുടെ എക്സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് പ്രൊഡ്യൂസറായും പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചു. സ്ത്രീ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന 'മുജെ ക്യാ ബേച്ചേഗാ രൂപയ' തുടങ്ങിയ ഗാനങ്ങള് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
ബോളിവുഡില് 'ഡല്ഹി ബെല്ലി'യിലെ 'ബേദര്ദി രാജ', 'ഫുക്രെ'യിലെ 'അംബര്സാരിയ', 'തലാഷി'ലെ 'ജിയ ലാഗെ നാ' തുടങ്ങിയ ഹിറ്റ് ഗാനങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് അവര് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഭര്ത്താവ് രാം സമ്പത്തുമൊത്ത് 'ഓം ഗ്രൗണ് മ്യൂസിക്' (OmGrown Music) എന്ന പ്രൊഡക്ഷന് ഹൗസ് നടത്തുന്നു. സംഗീതത്തിന് പുറമെ സ്ത്രീാവകാശങ്ങള്ക്കായി ഉറച്ച ശബ്ദമുയര്ത്തുന്ന വ്യക്തികൂടിയായ ഇവര് ഇന്ത്യന് മീ ടൂ (#MeToo) പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ പ്രധാനികളിലൊരാളായിരുന്നു. സംഗീതരംഗത്തെ വിവേചനങ്ങള്ക്കെതിരെയുള്ള പോരാട്ടവും തന്റെ കലാജീവിതവും വിവരിക്കുന്ന 'ഷട്ട് അപ്പ് സോന' (Shut Up Sona) എന്ന ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി അവര് നിര്മ്മിക്കുകയും അതില് അഭിനയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
