Tree Walk-Thiruvananthapuram is a network of citizens formed in May 2012 in response to the felt need to observe, document and monitor the tree diversity in the city. Formed in the memory of Professor of Botany Dr.C.Thankam, Tree Walk has created a space to know and understand trees, campaign and defend the rights of the citizen to clean air and cool spaces and also create awareness in schools and colleges about trees. Tree Walk is in the process of documenting the trees in green lungs along with attempting to enhance Green cover in a developing city. Tree Walk’s data bank is the result of years of sensitive observations and love for trees that its diverse members have nurtured.

RARE TREES IN THE CITY

The 12 Rare trees are ones which have been given this status either by virtue of them being rare as far as the city is concerned or globally threatened and rare. Thus the trees Clammy Cherry, Sage leaved Alangium, Haldu and Kaim are rare by their sparse presence in the city. The trees like Arjun tree and Malabar Iron wood are rare and endangered globally because of destruction of the rainforest ecosystem where they grow.

WONDER DOZEN TREES

The 12 Wonder Dozen trees is a walk specially designed by Tree Walk to introduce and instill curiosity and awe for trees in the beginner. They have been chosen for a variety of reasons which include their special names, the color and beauty of flowers, their architecture, their status in the wild and so on.
